Sorry for the stupid question, but what is a good program to scan physical paper files. I have a new PC and an old scanner, it apparently comes with no inbuilt programs to scan archives. What good preferrably freeware options are there.

How old are you talking? Most scanners support the SANE standard, but some really old ones don’t.
