Right now I have 2 desktop computers repurposed as servers:

Computer A: Unraid (storage + docker containers)

  • i5-10600
  • 64gb DDR4
  • 16TB storage (4 drives)

Computer B: Proxmox (k3s dev machine)

  • i5-6600K
  • 32gb DDR4
  • 1TB storage (NVME SSD)

There is a refurbished server up for grabs in good condition:

  • $1200 AUD
  • Dell PowerEdge R630
  • 2 x E5-2690 v3
  • 512gb DDR4
  • Includes network adapter: DUAL QLogic 57810 DP 10Gb DA/SFP+
  • 3 month warranty

Main reasons for looking to replace both computers with the server:

  • Easier for me to deal with a single machine
  • More RAM and cores / threads for resource allocation to k3s containers (my k3s server has maxed out its memory requests) and running additional standalone containers

Thoughts? Is it worth the price and would it overall perform better than my existing 2 desktops. The alternative would be just bumping up the RAM in both the desktop servers to 128gb

That thing will be pretty loud especially if not cooled during your summers. Just be mindful of that. I might just upgrade the ram to keep the silence of the towers.
