Or just like a hard drive enclosure i guess. Currently I am looking at this one that has 5 bays. (ebay.com/itm/114750397138) Would this be somewhat reliable?
I heard people recommend the mediasonic probox but it only has 4 bays and is more expensive.
I currently have a cheap 2 slot docking station and its really finicky and is starting to disconnect randomly.
Some of them don’t pass SMART data, or worse, pass the same data for all drives. Check the Amazon/external reviews.
I just bought a QNAP TL-D800C that looks pretty good and was on a BF sale.
I had a Mediasonic four bay case. When it died, it killed three out of the four drives in it. But I wouldn’t single out Mediasonic. All of the cases like this are built cheap to reach a price point. I’ve had a bunch of other multi disk USB enclosures die, some taking the drives with them, some not.
If you’ve got several disks of stuff that matters to you, you don’t want it in one of these cases. Don’t rely on USB connected DAS for permanent drive connections.
Either get a bigger case so can put your PC parts and all the drives you want in it, or build a NAS.
Not necessarily a popular opinion, but it’s really cut back on headaches.
