So, I bought a pc that I plan to use to run VMware on, it has a windows 10 pro license on it. Already checked and it’s a Retail License.

How could I save it for use in another machine or something? Can I use it in a VM if so, how many times before it doesn’t work? (I Understand that you can only use it in 1 machine at time).
Is there even a reason to want a VM with a license for a HomeLab environment?

Or

It just goes to waste.

Thanks for the answers in advance.

You can switch hard drives, save the original install but put in a new one for VMware. Easy.

Download recovery media from your computer manufacturer.

Or if you use the windows media creator tool, download the ISO file, burn iso to a usb, when you reinstall windows 10/11, it will auto activate using the manufacturers OEM key in bios(or whatever they call it now).

If you done need a licence, you can “return” it to a store you’ve bought a computer

if you need a key for VMs just buy a VL key on ebay and reuse it. it’s like 10$
