That way I can run my more demanding stuff without also having to power a bunch of spinning rust all the time. Yes the ~70 watts for 24/7 HDD’s nags at me that much; don’t try to tell me how long it will take me to make my $80 back 😂

Aren’t drive hibernating if you don’t use them?

Anyway At worse it’s 20$ per month if you pay .38 kW/h. 😅

Oh boy here we go for me :

    • 8x ESP32
    • 50 feet of LED
    • a crate of electrical hardware to power up everything.
    • a mini EliteDesk to replace my RetroPi with something with a bit more power.
    • I have to Install that dual 10gb card in my server.
    • I still have to finish my Watercooled GPU with an disconnect-able external radiator in his own case (I think I need another D5 pump… Damnit and more piping…)

I won’t talk about everything else I need to do haha.

  • if only my teenage self understood the treasure that setup would become.

Oh yeah that’s sad, I remember moving out of my parents house 15 years ago only to come back for Christmas and asking where the old Tandy computer was… My mother threw it out, that thing had a bunch of great classic games running on DOS like Rampage, Pitfall, Star Trek, galaga, centipede, etc… I’m still mad.

I don’t think I ever heard of Thecus… are they still around? Website is online but I couldn’t find any vendor with any model in stock… pretty strange.

Worse NAS goes to Iomega StorCenter ix2… Probably the worst device I ever worked with, Lenovo pulled the plug on the company in 2018, which existed since the 80s.

You could also run Xpenology on your custom NAS, which is a bootloader for Synology DSM os. Other alternative is TrueNAS, Unraid or OpenMediaVault (or any other I might not know).

QNAP nas are fine too, but I disliked the backdoor they had pre-2021… Terramaster are terrible chinese knockoff though, hardware is ok but the OS need to be flashed.

  • “Shucking” not “shrugging” 😂

Can I shrug it and use it internally without having to format it?

Not always has some use the external HDD interface sometime partition the data off by a few bytes, Western Digital is famous for that on the element series.

So I would recommend backing up data to another drive or if you can shuck it without being destructive in-case it doesn’t work while shucked.

    So TLDR 50/50 chance.
