This is a great write up. I was really close to trying this a while back, since I hated those internal drive bays. Especially if you get the rack rails, you simply can’t service drives without removing the server from the rack.
I ultimately didn’t want to downgrade from 15 to 12 bays, so I got a cheap server case on Alibaba with 24 bays instead.
I still have the old L4500U and may repurpose it later, who knows.
