I have an older Asus AC66U that’s sitting in the closet and thinking of repurposing it as a repeater for a Chromecast/TV setup in a detached garage. My house is covered by Synology WRX560 and I really dont want to shell out $$$ (say a mesh addon) for sporadic internet access to a device in a hot garage and figure this would be perfect. If I load the latest Merlin/DDWRT/etc and disable all routing/NAT and use the AC66U only as a repeater AP or bridge would it still be a security threat? Any WAN side traffic should be protected by the WRX560’s firewall and I assume WPA2 security is the same regardless of the hardware on the WLAN side or I could disable the AP and just use it as a bridge. Thoughts?

It would only be vulnerable from inside threats like some other infected machine.

Merlin has - like stock- an AP mode that disables the wan part. I don’t recall if ac66 has/had wireless-bridge.
