I noticed that file sharing on my home network was capped at 100mbps. My internet was fine and running at 1gbps on all devices. This was my network before:

Comcast > Arris G34 Router > Devices

I decided to try this configuration instead:

Comcast > Arris G34 Router > TL-SG105 Switch > Devices

This got my file sharing up to 1gbps. This appears to prove that the router was bottlenecking file sharing speed in the old configuration.

I could just leave the switch in the network but there really isn’t room for it in my network panel. It would be better to just prevent the bottlenecking on the router but I am unsure how to do this.

Check the sync speed on the interfaces and look for any errors incrementing. You might have a bad port or a bad cable somewhere causing it to sync at 100Mbps.

QOS policy being run on Arris G34 router ? Or bad firewall config?

Get a proper router that you configure and then throw the G34 into bridge mode

I suspect the problem is that when you put your switch in , it’s going to be faster because of a misconfiguration when you try to use the G34 as a switch

I can’t find a manual but 4* 1gbps ports just means the sync speeds to your pc.

That absolutely does not mean you can do 8gbps full duplex on all ports at the same time. But simple transfer between two PC’s should easily hit 1gbps.

But 100mbps seems oddly specific. Like a computer was negotiated to 100mbps for whatever reason. Also what was the consistency of the files? Loads of small ones or one big file? Was it the same file set you tested on the tp link?

Are you sure it isn’t capped at 100MBps? Mind the uppercase B which means byte. That would be perfectly normal on a gigabit network.
