  • u/TillAny4068, iOS, the operating system on all iPhones, is a closed developed OS by apple.

Any third party software out there, MUST use, in one way or another, apples drivers, whether they like it or not, to access the device.

Therefor, whehter you use itunes to make a backup of your device or a third party app, you are still using the same drivers, thus making the same api calls.

u/jjmontuori, the ‘case sensitivity’ issue seems more of a software/setting than anything else, especially since you’ve been getting it with your Drives, then NAS, so you should first look into your MAC, what type of settings you have, which I’m pretty sure if you dig in and search, maybe google search as well, you’ll find the setting that you need to change to remove that constraint.

With regard to 4 Bay NAS(es)… any of the known brands, whehter Buffalo Tech, Asustor, Synology, QNAP, etc, again known brands are a pretty save option to go for.

Keep in mind, NO NAS OEM is ‘perfect’ per say… each has it’s pros and cons and depending on your use case, you have then the options to choose from.

Now, if you want to have more of a comparison type of thing, then I’d suggest you take a look at a youtube channel called NAscompares (https://www.youtube.com/@nascompares/videos) and check out his videos. There you have good comparisons between brands and models and you can select what best suits your needs, budget and go from there.

u/mrqwest, No (answer to your question in the title of your post, that ibased on the picture you submitted with your post).

Am I SOL in terms of data retrieval?

as other redditor already suggested, place your question in the r/datarecovery subreddit.

Data recovery is definitely possible, depends on your budget and level condition of the drive --read your own comment that you tried to ‘repair’ it… sometimes that creates more problems than solutions… in that case you’ll need a proffessional data recovery service, which again, depending on your budget and how valuable that data in the drive is to you (you never had a backup of that data?), then it will depend how you can go about recovering the data (or as much as possible) from the drive itself.

If you want to go the data recovery professional service router, then you’ll be best doing a google search in the area where you live, get in contact and go from there.

u/Stt022, man, I’m sorry for your (almost) loss… (though you have not yet killed the NAS)

For the past 15+ or so years (about… plus minus a year or so), I modified my Home network to have all devices completly off… that was NASes, Switches, PCs, Home Server(s) (had a few at home), home sound system, everything off.

That change + (back then) I swtiched every single light bulb to LEDs…

That translated to almost 70% reduction in my energy comsumption…

Seeing that change on my monthly bill was nice… and has kept every since.

You could look into just shutting the devices down and only turning them on, on a need-to-use basis… you then get to keep your NAS, reduce your energy costs and save some doe.

Let me know what you think (or if there are additional considerations to think about)

  • u/100GHz, ZERO (answer to the question in title of your post)

    Same OEM for 20+ years.

With that said, over the years, I’ve replaced the NAS(es) ca. every 4 years to their newer model (and with each newer NAS, then also new/larger drives as well)… so ca. 5th Generations of NAS Systems in that time frame todate

    Note:

I always purchase at least 2 if not 4 of the same exact model and brand NAS (mainly for HA and/or redundancy --‘redundancy’ is NOT backup-- purposes… aka. one physical NAS dies, then you can literally take the drives out of the defective one, stick them into one of the other NAS, boot the device and have immediate access to the data if you are in a pinch --while the ‘temp’ replacement NAS drives will be out of the chasis and of course not available–)

    Best Regards

  • u/monsterzro_nyc,

    > The Buffalo site makes it seem like you have to get the drive from them

You don’t have to get the drive from BuffaloTech - you can use your own drive (and/or brand of HDD)

    About Capacity

as other redditors already pointed out (see u/hlloyge and u/avael273’s comments), the issue with Buffalo, is that the firmware on their products will ‘limit’ the maximum size of the drive that you can use.

In the case of the of the Terastation 1200DS that capacity is up to 4TB, so a max of 2x4TB (https://www.buffalo-technology.com/productpage/terastation-1200ds/)

With that said, there are forums with plenty postings that show you how you can manually extend the capacity of your RAID Array, but that involves you actually taking those drives out of the enclosure, plugging into another board, booting into linus, aka having to load those drives in linux and manually extend the size of your built RAID array to match the maximum capacity of your phisical drives. After you’ve done that, then you can put those HDDs back into your Terastation 1200DS and boot them up and your Terastation 1200DS will boot, see the drives, list their ‘new’ capacity and work just as if nothing happened.

    Best Regards
