Due to some unfortunate events, a portion of my cat5E cable has been badly melted. It is running from our router to my pc with plenty of slack. I’m unsure what the best course of action to use is. Any recommendations on components to use? the portion of cable that is at risk of burning is unable to be moved as it’s a tripping hazard otherwise so any tips on better protecting it would be nice too.

This can be a tricky repair but with a little bit of effort it will be like it never happened.

What you’re going to want to do is take the end that is plugged into your computer and then disconnect it.

Then take the end that is plugged into the router and disconnect it.

Now take the new cable you’re going to use to replace the old cable with and plug that into the router.

This next bit is the tricky bit, so pay attention.

Now, plug the new cable (not the old cable!!!) into your computer.

Phew, that was a tricky repair, but with a little hard work we did it,
