i’ve never had Wifi outside of what’s provided by Xfinity. If I buy a Router from someone like Asus do I have to pay an ISP to provide wifi through that router?
And if that’s the case what are some good resources to find out what ISP works best for me?
Wifi yes but it might be without internet…
The router takes your Internet connection and shares it on a WiFi network it creates, you do not buy WiFi from an ISP but you do need an ISP.
Interesting to see, how “Wifi” got synonymous with internet access.
We almost got over it and now we have 5G(hz) wifi as well. That has confused so many of my friends.
Just had to explain howcome the non-5G wifi also connects to your internet, as they are just different methods of connecting to the same router, and also, you have 4G internet , not 5G.
In my area at least, Comcast marketing is part of the problem. For years they blasted ads with “the fastest in-home wifi” and it took me many years to realize they weren’t bragging about some fancy APs they were offering. Like I always just rolled my eyes and said who the fuck uses the router they give you anyway. But now it makes a little more sense.
This is like asking “If I buy a refillable water bottle, do I still have to pay my water bill and turn on my faucet at home to fill it up?”
I guess you could connect over wifi from your device to your router…but if you want to access anything outside your home over the Internet, then you’d need an ISP…an Internet Service Provider.
These kinds of questions need to be banned. This sub is not to teach people about the absolute basics of the internet.
You mean basics of the wifi?
